Getting started

On Sunday I went up to the plot to get started, accompanied by my daughter Laura. We nosed around the allotment and met the man who hires out the strimmer. When he found out that I had just taken on a quarter plot he said that "...anybody who walks and breathes" should be able to cope and gave me some sweetcorn seeds. Tough talk - this sounded like a challenge.

Laura is nearly at the end of her degree and weakened from 3 years at University. She started digging, while I cleared a space for a compost bin. She poked at the soil with the lady fork in a half-hearted manner, then collapsed. I lasted a bit longer, but didn't finish the bin. We dragged our unfit carcasses home 2 hours later, having trouble walking and breathing. More next week ...
